While doing a bit of research into potential places for us to visit and work I came across a term I hadn’t heard before, Slomad (slow travelling nomad). And it turns out this term describes us perfectly.
It seems your traditional digital nomads move around much more frequently than we plan to, every few weeks, possibly spending time in nomad communities of like minded folk on a similar travel work experience.
We’ve been on a couple of fantastic road trips, often spending no more than two nights before moving on to the next destination, using all different modes of transport to travel between them, staying in a fantastic range of accommodation types and it’s an amazingly exciting way to travel. But these were holidays, I just don’t see how you can fit a working week into that life, and I don’t think I’d want to try. I think it would be exhausting.
Our aim is to bed in a little in the places we visit, really get to know the area, live like the locals and almost become a temporary part of the community, spending between one to three months in each place.
Maybe because we’re starting our adventure slightly later in life than your traditional nomad, our hopes and expectations are a bit different, or maybe it’s just our personalities and attitudes are a bit more laid back than others. Whatever the reason, I’ll certainly be wearing my slomad badge with pride.
